It all began my freshman year in the cafeteria at West
Brunswick high school. Now that I look
back, I was just a baby! On the first
day of school, all of the freshman girls were gathered together at one table
and at the next table over sat a whole gang of upper classman football players.
With that being said, we all sat up a
little straighter and flipped our hair a little more often to try and catch
their attention. Even though I hadn’t been in high school very long, the most
handsome blonde hair, blue eyed boy was the one who caught my eye.
To make a six year long story kind of short, I’m going to
summarize a bit. June 8, 2007 is when
Devin officially asked me to be his girlfriend.
This may sound like an easy task for a sixteen year old boy, but for
Devin it was a little bit different since I was his first girlfriend. As a matter of fact, I was his first kiss.
(CHECK!) He must be a pro at “popping the question”, whether it’s for a first
date or for my hand in marriage, because he always went above and beyond to
make it unforgettable. His dad always
told him, “Boy, you’re diggin’ yourself too deep spoilin’ her so early on in
this relationship.” (Knowing good and well he was guilty of the same. Mrs. Susie was treated like a princess
herself.) He always warned him that he
would have to top each sentimental gesture, but I’d say he’s done a pretty good
job thus far.
Anyhoo, back to my story….Devin asked me to be his girl
friend the last day of my freshman year of high school while driving to a friends house in his dad’s
black hunting truck. I initially told him no at first, then quickly asked if I could
change my answer to yes. We had been dating and talking on and off that past
year and that day he decided to pop the first question to start a relationship.
I immediately knew there was something special about this boy. He was a
football player and I was a cheerleader. We had the typical “high school
sweetheart” story. Little would I know, six years later, that handsome blonde
hair, blue eyed boy would ask me to be his wife. Devin is two years older than me, so he
graduated from high school the following year and went to East Carolina
University. Frequently, we heard that we would never make it while he was in
college and I was still in high school, but we never let anyone change our
perception of our relationship and how we felt about each other. Everyone told
us we were way too young to be in such a serious relationship, but we knew
there was no one else we’d rather be with. I am not going to lie; those two years
apart while he was at ECU were hard. It challenged us in our trust in one
another, but I believe those two years made us stronger than ever. I made the
decision to go to ECU also. Going away for college was one of the hardest
things I ever had to do because I am such a homebody, but having Devin there to
support me made a world of difference. I
didn’t choose ECU because that’s where he was, but of the AWESOME nursing
program in which I will graduate from in May. Devin recently graduated from ECU with a minor
in business and a major in health fitness.
ok ok...here it is....THE PROPOSAL
Okay okay, so here is what a lot of people have been asking
me lately…How did he propose? Well, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride because
it was definitely a very thorough and well thought out proposal.
June 8th is our anniversary date as I mentioned
earlier. This year, we had talked about just getting away for a weekend. We had
done a lot of research on Pawleys Island and found out that they had really
cool hammocks and just seemed like a nice and relaxing place to go. We had
planned to leave that Saturday, June 8th
in the afternoon to head down there.
The weekend of our anniversary, my roommate Jessica had asked
if she could come and stay that friday night because she had a cheerleading
competition to attend that next day near where I live, so of course I said yes.
I was a little worried that she had forgotten that it was our anniversary so I made
Devin kindly “remind” her that that day was just for me and him. Closer to the
weekend, my childhood best friend Amy asked if she could come down and stay
that Friday night and the two of us go get our nails done on Saturday. I was
getting a little antsy about everyone coming down that weekend because I knew
Devin and I had already had plans, but I told her that was fine because of
course I would never tell my best friend she couldn’t come stay.
So that day beautiful
Saturday morning, we started off our morning by going to the gym as we usually
do every morning together. After we finished our workout, we decided to go over
to ocean isle beach and just layout while we waited to head over to Pawley’s
Island. If any of you know Devin Sellers, he is NOT beach bum, so we did not
stay out there very long (30 minutes… MAX). We decided to ride over to my house
to play with our puppy Reese. When we got to the house, we walked inside first
to get a drink. My mom and step dad were in the middle of cooking this massive
dinner which I didn’t question because they said they were “taking it over to a
friend’s house.”
After we finished playing with our dog, Devin left to go get
ready and I started getting ready also. My mom was in the middle of helping me
curl my hair when I was bombarded by a gang of girls who blind folded me and put
a pillow case over my head. I immediately started to freak out and tell them
over and over that me and Devin had already had plans and he was about to be
there to pick me up. They all just laughed and shoved me into a car.
After driving me around in circles while I was still
blindfolded, we finally parked and they got me out of the car. All I could hear
was the ocean as we walked through what felt like a maze. Someone took the blindfold
off of me and I saw five of my closest girl friends: Amy, Jessica, Maggie,
Katelyn, and Mary Ashton. We were in the same location where Devin and I had
our one year anniversary date. On our one year anniversary, we had a picnic on
the beach and had boundary house chicken tenders and fries. When they took the
blind fold off of me, they had “reenacted” our one year anniversary date. I was getting a
little flustered because that weekend, a tropical storm was just coming through
and the wind and waves were so rough. We got hit by a wave and we were all
pretty soaked. I was freaking out and telling them “yall, I still have to go to
Pawley’s Island…now I’m going to have to go back home and get ready again.” They
told me just to enjoy our picnic and I’d see Devin soon and it would all work
out.
After our picnic they handed me a clue which lead me to my
sisters Emily and Megan. The two of them blind folded me once again and took me
“down memory lane.”
When I got to take the blind fold off again, we were where
Devin and I always go to watch the sunset on the tailgate of his truck. Here
waited Devin’s brother Drew with a blanket set up on the back of Devin’s truck
and a computer. On the computer was a video Devin created for me. It was a
slide show of all of our memories, a sweet message he said to me, ending with a
grand finale of his finest dance moves. I was then blind folded... yet again by
his brother, put into Devin’s truck and we started driving once again.
When the car stopped Drew got me out of the car and we had a
little chat together. Drew and I have recently grown a lot in our relationship.
I have always looked up to Drew and what a strong Godly man he is. He recently
got married to the most fabulous woman named Megan. Devin and I look up to
their marriage so much. Anyhoooo… After we finished talking, Drew handed me over to
someone. This person would NOT talk. Keep in mind, I am STILL blind folded and
walking with someone who wouldn’t say a word to me. I was getting a little
skittish and anxious to just find Devin so we could continue with our trip to
Pawley’s Island. I just knew he was going to be so upset that our plans had
been messed up.
After what felt like walking miles with this silent, random
person, I heard the sweetest voice say “Haley, it’s me...Devin.” He took the
blind fold off of me and we stood on the beach. In his hands was his dad’s
bible. He read a passage to me from Song of Solomon 3:4. He then turned me
around to find around 75 of my friends and family members holding up a banner that
said, “Will you marry me Haley?” He got on one knee and asked me to marry him!
Of course I said YES!!!!!
Needless to say, the trip to Pawley’s island was made up, my
mom was NOT cooking for a friend (she was cooking for the 75 people holding my
banner on the pier), my roommate didn’t have a cheerleading competition (she
helped kidnap me), and Amy took me to get my nails done because she knew I’d
have my hand photographed a lot that day (thank you again). A lot of lies were told but I think I can
forgive them this one time! I never once suspected a thing because Devin does sweet
things like scavenger hunts, etc. all the time.
well yall....October 4, 2014 can’t come fast enough. This is the day I will
marry the love of my life. I can’t wait to be a SELLERS! I’ve known for a
long time that Devin would one day be my husband and I can’t believe I can
finally call him my fiancé! With this blog, I am going to share our journey of engagement. This next year is going to be awesome and I cant wait to share it with you all.
